Job Description

Provides customer service and general assistance to support the daily operation of the library. Work includes checking library materials into and out from the library, processing interlibrary loans, searching for library materials for patrons, shelving and processing of new library materials.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Charges, renews and discharges circulating library materials using Evergreen Circulation system; patron registration; processes overdue charges and fines; collects money for library fines and fees and; interprets and enforces library policies and procedures to the public. Opening and closing of library procedures.

Answers telephone calls and email messages and provides information or otherwise assists patrons. Answer’s routine reference questions; performs readers advisory services.

Provides patrons assistance with basic personal computing skills to include Internet, online catalog, helps troubleshoot problems with digital media

Assists in collection maintenance

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in person and by phone. Ability to work effectively with patrons of all ages and interest. Working knowledge of library operations and ability to type and complete data entry on computers. Ability to maintain accuracy in record keeping

Must be able to work with a high degree of self-direction and independence. Comfortable working with Social Media.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

The position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment including but not limited to public and circulation computers, Microsoft word, telephone, and copy machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to stand, sit, walk, stoop and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to kneel, bend, push and pull objects. Must be able to lift or move up to 10 pounds.  The employee must be able to speak and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK SCHEDULE

The schedule is fairly regular with approximately 15 hours a week including working 2 evenings until 8 and Saturdays from 10-3. Some flexibility preferred to cover for times when Director is unavailable.

SELECTION GUIDELINES

The successful candidate will be chosen by the Library Director and approved by the Library Trustees through the hiring procedures set forth in the Town’s Personnel Policies and Procedures.

The position description does not constitute an employment agreement between the Town and the employee and is subject to change by the Town as the needs of the Town and requirements of the position change.
