Job Description

The Newport Public Library is seeking applications for a full-time Circulation and Collection Management Assistant (CCMA). This 35 hour per week position is 17.5 hours per week in the Circulation Department and 17.5 hours per week in the Collection Management Department.

During a Circulation shift, the CCMA performs circulation desk duties, checks materials in and out, renews materials, collects and records fees and fines, issues library cards and enters patron data, and answers the main desk telephone. The successful candidate provides patron assistance and responds to questions and concerns. Other duties include, but are not limited to distributing, processing materials from other libraries, as well as sorting, shelving and shifting materials. Strong customer service skills, the willingness to go the extra mile, and the ability to solve problems on behalf of the patron are absolutely essential. 

In addition to these duties, the CCMA is expected to assist with receiving inventory and processing material to prepare items for circulation (stamping, Mylar application, labels, etc.), as well as digital cover art manipulation and item repair work while working in the Collection Management Department. Some copy cataloging, shifting and ongoing collection maintenance will be required at the direction of the Collection Management Department Head and the Collection Management Lead.

The Newport Public Library may provide comprehensive training for its ILS (Sierra) as needed, including time to attend virtual meetings provided by the Library’s consortium, Ocean State Libraries.  Should in-person training resume, the successful candidate may be required to attend classes in OSL’s offices in Warwick. The ability to interpret and enforce Library policies is required at all times, and is the responsibility of each employee.  The successful candidate must have a proficient knowledge of email, Internet applications, Google Suite and Microsoft Office applications.  Other software/internet skills are helpful, so please include those in your letter of interest.

This position is for full-time employment of 35 hours per week, including Saturdays and some evenings. Specific hours are subject to change based on the needs of the Library. The Newport Public Library offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and life insurance, 13 paid holidays per year, as well as paid vacation, sick, and personal leave after three months and upon successful completion of the probation period.  The schedule is always set in the best interests of the Library and may change over time.

Duties
General Circulation duties, under the supervision of the Department Head:

  • Greeting patrons
  • Issuing library cards & processing renewals
  • Processing library fines
  • Checking library materials in and out
  • Sorting, shelving, and shifting library materials

Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, manipulate and push heavy book trucks on slight ramps, through doorway openings; must be able to bend, squat, shift, and have flexibility to retrieve items on high and low shelves
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
  • Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment preferred
  • Previous library experience preferred
  • Driver’s license preferred
  • Proficiency with computer troubleshooting, Microsoft Office (particularly Excel, Publisher and Teams), Google Suite required. Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Sierra ILS and Canva preferred.
