Job Description

Position Summary: Operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the Library’s mission by providing comprehensive, patron-focused public services, planning/conducting outreach, and participating in targeted activities for young adults ages 12-24 years old. This position requires flexibility, collaboration, communication, and the ability to identify priorities and shift focus quickly. While this position is based out of East Library, this person provides direction and guidance about outreach for the entire Library District.

Essential Functions

Functions listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Coordinates and engages in community outreach and programming with schools, businesses, and other community groups to expand visibility and partnerships with the library and community in conjunction with Pikes Peak Library District’s communications and marketing initiatives.   
  • Acts as a special resource provider in specific service areas, including library resources (databases, books, etc.) for young adults.
  • Provides work direction for outreach and other assigned projects; provides guidance and training to other staff. Types of outreach include research classes, booktalking, community events, and more (both virtual and in-person). Training topics include instruction, booktalking, classroom management, and more (both virtual and in-person).
  • Plans and conducts programs district-wide; for example, the teen writing contest.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements assigned projects related to organizational goals and objectives. Develops classroom instruction about library resources, information literacy, and more.
  • Provides leadership for specialized projects, services, programs, and activities related to Services strategic goals and objectives; serves on project teams or committees.
  • Promotes library services through tours, demonstrations, talks, and displays; teach classes on technology and Library resources to patrons and staff.
  • Provides specialized public services for patrons as they visit the library, call on the telephone, or communicate in a virtual environment.
  • Manages specific projects, programs or events, evaluate/select materials for a specific collection, or maintain responsibility for specific websites. This includes curriculum LibGuides for young adults, teachers, school librarians, parents, and staff.
  • PowerPass is a just-for-students library card from PPLD, granting access to the Library’s digital resources (for example, databases, eBooks, and song and movie downloads). With direction from the Young Adult Services Director, this position provides information about library services and instruction to teachers, school librarians, students, and staff. Develops curriculum LibGuides based on Colorado education standards in conjunction with schools.
  • Compiles and analyzes data and research to assist with decision-making especially with outreach; makes recommendations for new initiatives or solutions to challenges. Anticipates challenges due to seasonal workflow, emerging technology, and evolving community dynamics; helps set priorities for adapting to systemic change.
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the Library; maintains confidentiality in all patron and staff interactions; models exemplary customer service behaviors for library staff.
  • Provides specialized assistance and information about library services, collections, and procedures; assists patrons with an advanced level of assistance in finding materials or online information, technology support, and community resources. Provides expertise and direction for collection management and maintenance. 
  • Provides individual readers’ advisory assistance, providing materials in requested formats that engage, enrich, and inform. Provides expertise regarding developmental stages, interests, and literature for assigned age groups or target populations.
  • Organizes, maintains, reviews, recommends, and tracks usage statistics of specialized files and databases. This position is the database liaison with Collection Management for Gale databases: Opposing Viewpoints, Bio in Context, U.S. and World History in Context, and Gale Presents: Peterson's Test Prep (formerly Testing and Education Reference Center).
  • Embedded librarianship with youth serving organizations and community efforts such as the El Paso County Youth Suicide Prevention Workgroup. Maintain partnerships with NAMI Colorado Springs (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and the African American Youth Leadership Conference.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Duties are considered non-essential and include the following:

  • Keeps informed about library and department information.
  • Attends regular department meetings and scheduled All-staff meetings.
  • May act as person-in-charge as assigned; assumes responsibility for safe and effective operation of the library; ensures that security and safety reports are completed accurately and submitted as required.

  • Demonstrates ability to effectively use applications software, including Microsoft Office 356 Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive, Integrated Library System, Zoom (and other virtual meeting platforms), along with standard office equipment.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a team member, organize daily work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, detail-rich environment.

Education and Experience:

1.    Requires an MLS or MLIS degree.

2.    Requires a minimum of two years of library experience.

3.    For some positions, experience in working with foreign language materials and/or specialized formats and equipment is preferred.

4.    Bilingual ability is a plus in serving a diverse community.

5.    Drivers license and/or reliable mode of transportation.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work is primarily conducted in an office setting that provides comfortable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Position requires the ability to sit and use a computer or standard office equipment for extended periods.  Position requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time.  Position requires the ability to occasionally reach, bend, climb, twist and squat. Position requires the ability to lift up to 35 pounds.  Ability to push a loaded book truck required.

Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.
