Job Description

Objective: The Collection Development Librarian builds a relevant, high-interest collection across formats, platforms and levels.  This position exercises professional judgment and expertise in the selection of appropriate materials and online resources to serve the needs of our community. Cross-departmental collaboration is required to efficiently deliver a premium experience to internal and external customers.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities:

Collection Management: 

  • Utilizes vendor services and professional tools to evaluate and select materials and resources in various physical and digital formats across age groups. Assures materials are ordered in a timely manner and in quantities that meet demand. Determines which materials are appropriate for standing orders.
  • Analyzes existing collections, community trends and library data to improve collection performance; create collection reports to support branch collection maintenance.
  • Monitors library and publishing trends, collection development tools, vendor services, best practices in collection management, and developments in the profession.  Shares knowledge and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Supports compliance to DCL collection policy. 
  • Monitors that collections management policies embrace and align with intellectual freedom concepts, and respects the position of neutrality – open to all.
  • Collaboratively manages additional projects including opening day collections, collection refreshes, and collection renovations. 
  • Regularly contributes reviews of new titles to promote library collections to customers and staff.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

Budgetary Management:

  • Participates in recommending annual budget allocations.
  • Responsible for tracking expenditures and monitoring assigned budget. 
  • Responsible for budget allocations and purchasing books, digital content, databases, and other educational resources for the annual State Grants to Libraries.
  • Tracks and reports related total expenditures and community outcomes.

Electronic Resource Management:

  • Responsible for electronic resource management, including setting up trials, negotiating prices, evaluation use, and maintaining relationships with vendors.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Works with staff by providing on-boarding training on collection development processes and practices.
  • Coordinates with Collection Services team to support necessary collection maintenance processes and practices.
  • Establishes ad hoc committees to explore new products or services, improve cross-departmental communication and/or establish new procedures.
  • Works collaboratively across the organization to improve library service delivery to the public.  Attends meetings around the District as needed.

Technical Performance:

  • Maintains expert knowledge and use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite, Horizon, and other industry-related software. Learns new technology that is introduced in the industry and the organization, as needed.

Required Experience and Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Information/Library Science strongly preferred. Three or more years’ professional experience within libraries is required. A combination of experience and education will be considered.

Physical Requirements: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to support a 7-day a week operation.  Work at computer stations for extended periods. Participate in meetings and events at various locations and at varied times throughout the day. Ability to read as small as 8pt font.
