Job Description

LIBRARY DIRECTOR

DeWITT COMMUNITY LIBRARY

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

MLS desirable.  Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 2-5 years library experience required.  Experience in an administrative position, library related field or supervisory position recommended.  Library has a paid director that will be certified at the required level within 2 years of employment date as stated in the IN SERVICE TO IOWA: PUBLIC MEASURES OF QUALITY, 3rd edition.

This position supervises and administers the delivery of Library Services to the public and community, supervises staff and volunteers.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS

*          Ability to use a variety of computer resources, including word processing and database management, as well as automation systems, electronic information resources and Internet-based resources; retrieve information, whatever its source or format; to think creatively and problem-solve; read written material.

*          Require a thorough knowledge of library practices; programs, procedures and techniques.

*          Ability to work well with people; to plan, direct and regulate library services; demonstrate initiative; to solve problems; to maintain confidentiality; stay abreast of new legislation and/or procedure affecting library services; to prepare accurate reports; to keep the board informed.

*          Must have a valid driver’s license.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Assists library customers in their use of the library, performing work which is moderately physically demanding.  Locating, obtaining, and replacing materials from shelves in the stacks on all levels, walking and standing for extended time periods (two to four hours) and carrying books or boxes for shelving or storage (up to 50 pounds).  This requires lifting, reaching, kneeling and stooping.

Clarity of vision for close up work as well as distance, identifying color differences, hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.

Ability to observe differences in date, accurate math computations and verbal communication skills.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

*          Reports and consults with the Library Board.

*          Works with the President of the board on meeting agenda.

*          Implements and recommends library policies and procedures.

*          Works with the board on preparation for the library budget.

*          Prepares annual report for Board, City, County and State.

*          Compiles statistical data regarding library operations.

*          Recommends and helps develop goals and objectives for short and long range planning with staff and board input.

*          Keep records of financial data.

*          Recruits, hires, dismisses, supervises, evaluates and prepares work assignments and schedule of staff.

*          Meets regularly with the staff to coordinate and clarify library procedures and policies.

*          Participates in continuing education and professional organizations; encourages continuing education for library staff.

*          Attends county, regional and other meetings as required.

*          Supervises physical upkeep of the building with help from the Library Board.

*          Administers and coordinates library programs and services to meet community needs.

*          Promotes library services and handles library public relations.

*          Supervises volunteers.

*          High interest in providing quality library service to a wide spectrum of people in the community.

*          Displays a friendly tactful and courteous attitude.

*          Deals effectively with officials, staff, community leaders and the public.

*          Advisor for the Friends of the Library.

*          Selects and orders library material.

*          Catalogs, classifies, and processes library materials.

*          Provides reference and library advisory service.

*          Oversees collection development and presentation.

State Library of Iowa Public Library Director Certification is required within 2-years of hire.
