Job Description

The University Libraries at the University of Denver – comprised of the Main Library at the Anderson Academic Commons, a remote storage facility called the Hampden Center (HC), and the Bonfils Stanton Music Library in the Newman Center – is a highly collaborative organization that serves a diverse population ranging from our students, staff, and faculty to public and other academic patrons from the surrounding region. The Hampden Center is a warehouse that houses materials, not a branch-library capable of providing in-person customer service. The hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 8am –4pm. The University Libraries at the University of Denver are central to discovery and creative interaction among students and faculty, and provide collections, services, personnel, and systems that support the teaching and research programs of the University. Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities & Operations, this exempt level position will supervise the materials handling department at the University of Denver’s Hampden Center, and assists with monitoring daily building activity. This position will train and supervise non-appointed staff. This position will require a great deal of flexibility, project management, and creativity; will be responsible for the daily operations of the Hampden Center: managing incoming and outgoing stored materials, supervising the scanning of Reserves and ILL requests, providing rapid retrieval of the collection, transportation to and from the Hampden Center and the University of Denver campus, communicating with storing partners, managing the ULA Amazon storefront – sales and donation pickups, tracking the space use and future growth of the HC, and insuring continuity of workflow which will provide staff and patrons the necessary materials they require. The position monitors and assists with responding to security related issues during non-operational hours, including nights and weekends.

This position will be based at the Hampden Center in Lakewood, Colorado.

Essential Functions

  • SUPERVISION:  Supervises, interviews, and hires staff and student workers who handle materials at the HC.  Responsible for tracking budget and scheduling of HC stacks staff and student workers.  Trains staff and student workers in unit workflow; ensures adequate coverage of unit during hours of operation; assists in the development of work standards for the department; provides leadership to staff members.  Determines staffing levels and participation in material handling projects at the HC.
  • STORED MATERIAL MANAGEMENT: Works independently; recognizes, identifies and solves problems related to service provision with regards to delivery schedules. Oversees specific duties at the HC (ingesting, returns, shelving, tray-condensing).  Responsible for pulling patron, Prospector, and departmental requests.  Oversees ongoing project management for HC materials management projects (such as WEST), and regularly collaborates with the Access Services Librarian, the Access Services unit, and Library Administration regarding workflow and procedures. Oversees the scanning of Reserves and ILL requests at the Hampden Center. Collaborates with University Risk Management, the Curator of Special Collections and Archives, and the Special Collections and Archives unit to maintain records management guidelines and procedures, and to coordinate processing of incoming and stored University Records using Alma, Excel spreadsheets, and Qualtrics for inventory designated for HC storage. Communicates with record storing departments as needed.
  • ULA AMAZON STOREFRONT: Helps manage the ULA Amazon storefront by listing, tracking and shipping sales. Communicates with ULA bookstore staff on campus about moving inventory and coordinates delivery.  Works with the Community Relations Manager to coordinate accepting donations from the public.
  • ALMA: This position requires an extensive knowledge of the Ex-Libris ILS.  Creates sets, ingests items, and updates item records of incoming and outgoing materials.  Communicates with the Access, Cataloging, Special Collections, Music, and LCPP teams regarding issues. Follows the ALMA listserv and updates to see if any changes impact the Hampden Center’s workflows.
  • TENANTS: Assists with communicating with partners that have space or materials in the building. Informs partners of building or equipment issues.
  • ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Responsible for opening and closing locked/armed areas of the building. Monitors security cameras and responds in the event a security alarm is triggered. Assists with maintaining departmental fleet vehicles, and coordinates lift equipment maintenance.  Submits facility related work orders and notifies the Assistant Director of Facilities & Operations when appropriate.  Maintains statistics for the annual report. Communicates with and directs incoming materials from outside vendors, such as moving companies.  Responsible for kitchen maintenance. Coordinates with University Libraries stakeholders on special projects as needed.
  • TEAM: Participates as a member of the Dean’s Office department in a team-based organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to follow established procedures closely and to perform work requiring considerable attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to use an automated library system and PC.
  • Ability to maintain clerical records.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team-based organization.
  • Must be able to drive a car, operate an aerial lift, and pass the University of Denver’s ‘Safe Driving Course’.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff, users, including University Faculty.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures.
  • Experience performing detailed work in an automated system
  • Ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous library or materials management.
  • Experience with Library Systems, such as Ex Libris Alma and/or RE:Discovery.
  • Working knowledge of LC classification schemes and subject headings.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Prior project management experience.

Working Environment

The workplace will be the Hampden Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The workplace within this unit is a culturally diverse one.  The department is highly automated with attention paid to ergonomics and safety.  Employees work collaboratively in a team-based organization. Employees have access to a workstation equipped with easy access to the library's online catalog as well as tools via the Internet.

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is 6.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $36,000 - $46,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
